We are inviting people who have had 2 or more cancers from Atlantic Canada to tell us about their experience. OASIS is a multi-generational mentorship program being offered right here in the Miramichi through NBCC.  It is a little different from mentorship programs you may have heard about in the past as OASIS is based on the specific and unique needs of the individual mentee.  This program will offer the resources and guidance necessary to explore their entrepreneurial goals.  Wondering if you’d like to be part of this program? BE A MENTEE: You are an NBCC alumni, You are a budding entrepreneur who wants to build a successful business, You want to build strategic connections in the community and have the opportunity to be exposed to the benefits of training and professional development opportunities or You could benefit from a wealth of diverse experience and knowledge to help you through the challenges of owning your own business.  BE A MENTOR:  You will nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs, You will benefit from sharing your wisdom, guidance, ad knowledge on business and professional challenges, You will make connections with new entrepreneurs and business community & You will make a difference and contribute to community prosperity.

The Tutoring Centre, located at 1745 Water Street in Chatham (across from The Great Canadian Dollar Store) is offering tutoring sessions for the 2014-2015 school year, for students of all ages.  Limited number of spots available, please contact 506-773-5636 for more information.

Fall & Winter is approaching and also the decision as to what kinds of activities your children will be involved.  Is it hockey, skating, gymnatics or something else?  If you are thinking that the
costs associated just may be too much for your family budget, check out the application form for Kid Sport Miramichi.  KidSport Miramichi is a confidential organization that helps families needing assistance in paying sport registration fees.  KidSportis a children’s charity administered by Sports NB.  The objective is to assist families facing financial obstacles to participate in community sport programs.  Their deadline for applications is Sept 30th, 2014.  All completed applications will be looked at for sponsorship.  Applications can be picked up at the City Hall, the Golden Hawk Recreation Center and the Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation Department.  Forms can also be found on the following website and go to the Apply for Assistance Link.  For further information please call Jason Walsh at the Recreation Coordinator at 506-623-2054,  Please note that each application requires a notice of assessment from Revenue Canada.  You can obtain this by calling 1-800-959-8281.

Fitness classes will be happening, perfect for the over 50 population, every Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 8:00pm - 9:00pm.  This 6 week program will happen at the NSER gym for a cost of
$35 for 12 nights (2 nights/wk) or $18 for 6 nights (1 night/wk).  You will need good sneakers, water bottle and small set of hand weights (2-5 lbs).  Mats are provided at the gym but you are welcome to bring your own.  For more information contact Ruth Harris by e-mail or 506-836-7486.

The Miramichi Rotary Community Band is looking for new members.  Miramichi's only brass and reed band practices weekly from September to June.  The band has been together since 1995 and performs locally at graduations and other events. If you are new to the area, or simply want to revive your musical talents from school, please give Elizabeth Walker a call at 506-778-8001.

The Greater Blackville Resource Centre thrift store sells quality used clothing to raise money to support the Blackville Food Bank.  It is open every Wednesday & Thursday 10:00am - 4:00pm and Friday 10:00am - 2:00pm.  Find great deals on all men's, women's and children's clothing, plus a nice selection of some specialty items.  Located in Upper Blackville just past the Nine Pine Restaurant.  For more information, please call 506-843-9024.

The Breakfast Caregiver Support Group will happen at 10:00am at the Fundy Line Conference Room (Back Room).  This nurturing group is designed for caregivers of persons who suffer from Mental Illness/Addictions Issues.  Breakfast will be at your own expense but the nurturing and supportive environment is PRICELESS.  For more information, please call The Schizophrenia Society of NB Miramichi at 506-622-1595 or Janie Hubbard at 506-622-7966, please leave a message if no answer.

The Community Support Group will be happening from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at Newcastle Kin Centre.  This nurturing group is designed for people recovering from Mental Health and Addictions.  Caregivers are more than welcome as well.  For more information, please call The Schizophrenia Society of NB Miramichi at 506-622-1595 or Linda Stevens at 506-622-2440.

There will be a beautiful night of worship and prayer with an amazing band for Christians at The Point Church - Newcastle location (formerly known as Newcastle United Baptist Church) on the first Saturday of each month at 7:00pm.  Everyone is welcome.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 3rd annual ‘Women of Influence Night’ to be held on Saturday November 29.  WOMEN is Miramichi’s only female entrepreneurial network serving the greater Miramichi area.  Nominations for the award categories of Female Entrepreneur of the Year, Female Professional of the Year and Women of Influence are now being accepted.  WOMEN is a membership-based network, however nominees, as well as the person sending in the nomination, do not have to be a member of WOMEN.  Details of each award can be found at

Nominations are being accepted for the 16th Annual Miramichi Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Gala!  This year the awards gala falls within Small Business Week and will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at the Rodd Miramichi River Hotel.  If a business or business owner comes to mind while reading, please nominate them with the form on our homepage. 

The following are the Awards and a brief description:

1.  Business Award of Excellence in recognition of a business enterprise that best exemplifies the spirit of economic development and entrepreneurship within the Miramichi region. This recipient models professional conduct and customer care for our citizens.
2.  President’s Award in recognition of a business enterprise senior leader that models professional conduct, advocates and catalyzes economic development, and contributes to the community as a steward and citizen. The Miramichi Chamber of Commerce President determines the recipient.
3.  Newcomer Business Award in recognition of a business enterprise new to the community that has initiated a commerce ‘start up’ within the last calendar year, modeling professional conduct and exemplary business practices and behaviours.
4.  Employee of the Year in recognition of an employee within a business enterprise that exemplifies superior customer /client service and teamwork participation. This recipient models best behaviours and sets the pace for productivity and workplace spirit.

The Newcastle Sparks, Brownies & Girl Guides will be out once again for their door-to-door cookie sales, selling their Famous
CHOCOLATE MINT COOKIES! for $5 a box.  Selling these cookies help girls attend camps and international camps, learn new skill and teaches them values of selling.  Thank you for supporting Girl Guide Greatness :)

Power Toning at Dr. Losier Middle School Gym will be happening from 7:00pm - 8:00pm for a cost of $25/4 weeks or $8 per
class.  Low Impact Intervals of Cardio and Strength Training.  Great music and lots of fun with all money being donated to the Dr. Losier Home and School.

OCTOBER 3, Friday
Maritime Idol Coming to Miramichi!  Open to all ages!  Now into their 9th season, they are searching for talent in the Miramichi.  Get exposure and win a 12 song cd recording.  First place is $2000, second place is $1000 and third place is $500.  Contestants must register online at  Performances are videotaped and put online for voting and there is also live voting each week by the audience.  Rankings are combined and accumulated over the 4 weeks to determine the top half moving on with winners from other area competitions to face the judges at a Regional competition.

The CBC Galaxy Rising Star recipient Matchstick Mike & The Chain Smokin' Alter Boys and special guests Mindy Ward and
George Paul will be kicking off fundraising efforts with an evening of music for the soul at the Riverside Entertainment Center, 2546 King George Highway, in support of the development of a community food bank and in support of the other local foods banks.  Doors open at 6:30pm and tickets will be on sale at the REC and at Cloud's Convenience or they can be purchased at the door for $10.  A non perishable food item will also be accepted at the time of the event.

OCTOBER 4, Saturday
Autism Resources Miramichi will be having a Bag Day Fundraiser at the Newcastle Superstore location between 12:00pm - 4:00pm.  Volunteers are needed to help bag groceries for donations to raise funds for the center .  If you can spare 2 hours for this event please contact the center by email or phone at 506-622-8137.  The event is only for 4 hours on Saturday and they are hoping to get enough volunteers to be present at least 6-8 cashier stations.  This would be a nice activity that a parent and child can do together while supporting a great cause!  Please contact the Autism Resource Centre ASAP so they can add you to the schedule

The Fall Household Hazardous Waste & E-Waste Collection Day will be held from 8:00am - 12:00pm at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church Parking lot, 320 Newcastle Blvd.  Adhesives, Aerosol Cans, Antifreeze, bleach, cleaning products, computers, monitors, digital cameras etc. will be accepted.  Items NOT accepted:  Washers, dryers, toasters, microwaves, vacuums, refridgerators, Air conditioners or small kitchen appliances.  This is a residential collection, commercial & industrial waste WILL NOT be accepted.  Please do not leave items prior to the event.

Cape Breton fiddling sensation Natalie MacMaster and husband Donnell Leahy are bringing the Masters of the Fiddle Tour to the
James M. Miramichi Wesleyan Church will be showing the movie "The 5th Quarter" Sunday at 6:00pm.  All are welcome, bring a friend!  In The 5th Quarter, 15-year-old Luke is killed in a tragic accident, and his close-knit family is devastated — but together they decide that a part of Luke's legacy can live on by donating his organs. When Luke's brother, a talented football player, honors his brother's memory by dedicating his entire season to him, the family discovers that miracles can happen, and that God is the master of healing.  Based on a true story!

A special Coffee Break, will be held between 10:00am - 11:30am at the offices of the Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association, 1808 Water St. Miramichi, in support of the Alzheimer Society.  Come and join in for a pre-Friday, pre-Thanksgiving break!  All they ask of you is to make a donation to the Alzheimer Society.  Food and Drink; Coffee, Tea and Juice will be provided.  They look forward to seeing you here. It's simple and easy to get involved and lend support.  Just have a coffee :)

The Whooper Spring Players of Blackville are hosting a roast beef dinner with entertainment beginning at 6:00pm and followed by a two hour show performed by "Country Blend", a five person group from Alberta who perform songs made famous by such legendary country singers Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and more of the country greats.  The show will be held at the United Church Center, 143 Main St. Blackville.  The cost of the dinner with entertainment is $25 each and tickets can be purchased by contacting Richard or Alice Gilks at 506-843-6139
